New Tesla Model 3 Performance: 500-plus horses for less than $50K

How does up to 510 horsepower, a top speed of 163 mph, and a zero-to-60 in 2.9 seconds for $45,490 (after $7500 tax rebate) sound? That's what the new Tesla Model 3 Performance offers in an effort to deliver the “perfect, high-performance daily driver.”

It uses the revised Model 3 that debuted in 2023 as its foundation.

The Performance version, though, gets its own chassis hardware that makes it stiffer while also reducing mass. Add in some adaptive dampers, with hollow damper piston rods, a multi-sectioned stabilizer bar, ultra-high strength steel springs, and stiffer suspension top mounts, too.

As far as power, Tesla said the new Performance 4DU performance drive unit “unlocks more torque, power and better efficiency.” Up to 22% more continuous power, 32% more peak power and 16% more peak torque delivery, according to Tesla. Also expect 2% less energy consumption when compared to the previous gen Model 3 Performance. The power delivery is also more rear-biased, too.

The Tesla Model 3 Performance rides on set of 20-inch wheels with Tesla-specific Pirelli P Zero 4 performance tires. Tesla said the staggered setup is optimized for the 4DU’s more torque.

As far as the computer, Track Mode V3 now “integrates motor controls, suspension controls, powertrain cooling, and Tesla’s Vehicle Dynamics Controller (VDC) under a single, unified system.” Tesla said this results in a “more predictable experience.” Track Mode V3 will also provide more vehicle data and control.

The Model 3 Performance gets some aero improvements over the base Model 3, with different front and rear fascias, spoiler, front splitter and rear diffuser. Compared to the previous gen Model 3 Performance, engineers reduced drag by 5%, lift by 36%, and improved front-to-rear lift balance by 55%.

Most people can't handle 0-60 in 8 seconds, so yes, please give them a 4,500lb car that can do it in 2.9.

I hear their new roadster they're working on will do it in 0.9, but most people are not in the kind of shape acceleration like that requires.

The original Model 3 Performance was over $80,000 when fully optioned and delivered, so it's wild to see this one going for so much less.  Everyone else continues to hike prices -- have you priced a new M3/M4 or Panamera?

Since Tesla doesn't seem to do model years, how does one know if the car they are shopping is a "new" M3P with all these upgrades, an old one without them, or something in between? Certainly looks like a compelling package.

Looks like the only exciting color (red) is a $2,000 option and there are destination and order fees but still seems like a good deal. Especially with so many traditional fun cars selling over MSRP.

That's only $3k more than we paid for our dual motor in 2019, not counting inflation - and the tax credits for us are $12,500. Killer deal.

This thing is going to be a hell of an autocrosser. A friend who works in Tesla chassis said "no comment" when asked about the staggered tire sizes, so I suspect step 1 will be to square it up. Love the aero improvements as well.

CrashDummy, the free colors change from time to time. When we got ours, black was $0. Now it's $1500. I think red was free for a while recently. Keep your eyes open. 

If you're looking at used, I believe you can  get all the build date data from the car via the screen or the app. I know you can get specs and warranty info that way. Kinda like an Apple laptop.

Looks like a decent prospect. I did test drive the new refreshed Model 3 and its nice but I just hate the fact it doesn't have the stalks anymore.
